7 Best Solutions for Visibility while Driving in Rain

The 2020 Atlantic hurricane season is predicted to be more active than usual. Hopefully, no region experiences any extreme damage during this time, which typically runs from June 1 through November 30. Undoubtedly, though, you will experience heavy downpours from the tropical storms that arrive.

To help you navigate stormy weather and improve your driving, we offer the following.

7 Tips to Improve Driving in a Storm

  1. Avoid distractions. Before you even get behind the wheel, make a conscious decision to focus only on your drive and destination. Don’t mess with the radio dial, or your phone, or anything else in the car.
  2. Make sure your headlights are on. Don’t rely on your automatic headlights turning on in heavy rain. Sometimes light sensors will detect light that is needed in low-visibility situations. Use the standard button that turns lights on to be certain your headlights are working and will remain.
  3. Drive more slowly than you typically would, even on the streets that are familiar to you. Reducing your speed will help you avoid hydroplaning on the road’s wet surface.
  4. Keep a safe distance behind other cars and watch for those whose headlights are not on. Try to anticipate their breaking and focus on their brake lights.
  5. If you need to brake, do it slowly. It avoids fishtailing and gives those following behind you plenty of notice that they should slow down as well.
  6. Anytime you feel uncertain about your safety, pull off the road completely and wait for the weather to improve.
  7. Before any trip, apply a hydrophobic spray like NeverWet Windshield for a long-lasting barrier against moisture. NeverWet Rain Repellent provides superior longevity versus competition (2X longer) in wiper blade abrasion testing. NeverWet hydrophobic products are sold globally; here’s where to find them: https://www.neverwet.com/where-to-buy/index.php

Rain Repellent Pros

Through Rust-Oleum, NeverWet branded products are available in a trigger spray bottle and are easy to use. You’ll also find NeverWet’s water-beading technology in the WipeNew brand as RainBrella. Check out this news footage showing how effective RainBrella at repelling rain and keep grime off.

How Do I Apply the Windshield Protectant?

NeverWet hydrophobic water repellent is a clear coating, long-lasting barrier against moisture. It’s best to apply it in outside temperatures of 50-90 degrees F.

A single coating will last 2-8 months, through direct sunlight and outdoor conditions, before a top-coat re-coating is needed.

  • Step1: Use a glass cleaner to remove any dirt or debris from your windshield. Let it dry completely.
  • Step 2: Spray neverwet on towel and buff it into your window. Let it sit 5-10 minutes.
  • Step 3: Wipe off completely
  • Step 4: Repeat
  • Step 5: Look for any haze and remove any leftover product

(Don’t use it on your headlights or other plastic, though. It’s made for use on glass only.)

Check out a comparison between a treated and an untreated windshield in this video:

Using a dual treatment of NeverWet Glass Cleaner with NeverWet Rain Repellent will increase the effectiveness of your windshield wipers during a torrential downpour. The hydrophobic treatment withstands UV and windshield wiper abrasion. Better yet, it helps keep mud and dirt off the window for improved visibility, especially while driving through storms.

Here’s a fun video showing how well NeverWet Rain Repellent successfully keeps smashed pickle, olives, cherries, and more off a glass surface.

Granted, even torrential storms won’t be throwing that kind of debris at your car’s windshield. But glass that can stay clear after food is thrown at it is more than just water-resistant. It’s safer for when you’re driving through storms.

How to Protect Patio Furniture From Bad Weather

How excited are you to get outside and enjoy nice weather, entertain friends outdoors, and start grilling your dinner again?

It’s time to get your garden furniture and outdoor patio sets ready for the season, and time to protect cushions and seating from rain and bad weather, too.

Let’s face it, you’ll probably have to protect outdoor cushions, pillows — and outside fabrics in general — from spilled drinks and food, too!

First Step in Protection

The first step in protecting outdoor furniture is to clean it. Wash away any dirt, mildew, or mold that might have collected in the off-season on the furniture frames as well as on any chair cushions. The cleaning products should vary according to the type of patio furniture you have.

Even if you’ve kept your patio sets and gardening furniture covered through the winter, you should still give them a quick cleaning. (And clean the covers, too!)

Garden or patio sets made of metals, like cast-iron, aluminum, or copper will likely require a different type of cleaning solution than an outdoor gathering set that’s made of wicker or plastic. Read the labels on your cleaning products to make sure you use the best option.

Keep Patio Cushions & Outside Fabrics Dry

NeverWet Fabric is the best water-repellant spray to provide a defense against rain and other bad weather. It offers water repellency beyond other available products and it’s simple to use. It’s a one-step, superhydrophobic, water-repelling treatment to protect cushions on outdoor seating, as well as the canvas covers used to store patio furnishings during the off-season. It’s ideal for protecting:

  • Leather
  • Suede
  • Polyester
  • Cotton/poly blends
  • Canvas

 Patio Fashion and Function

You’ve likely put a lot of thought and money into the look and design of your outdoor furniture and accessories. Protect that investment and save money by extending the life of it. NeverWet’s ability to keep grime away and can extend its like-new appearance. It also can save time. No more panicked wash-downs right before your guests arrive for your outdoor gig.

NeverWet rain-repelling products offer superhydrophobicity, which means your outdoor furnishings get a super protectant coating that forces water (or other liquid) off the surface while it carries away dirt and grime. You can confidently host cookouts and garden parties without worrying about messy mishaps.

Spraying Outdoor Furniture

Avoid spraying in very windy or dusty conditions. You’ll want to cover the area nearby to protect it from any spray mist. First, test a small, inconspicuous area of the cushion or fabric piece you plan to coat with a protective spray. A test spray will help you get a feel for the spray pattern of the NeverWet Fabric product.

More is not better. You don’t want to saturate your outdoor cushions and furniture with NeverWet’s moisture-repelling products. Spray in quick, light, evenly protectant coats.

Allow the protected patio items to dry for 24 hours before they are exposed to any inclement weather conditions or moisture. To prevent possible blockage, wipe the nozzle of your NeverWet protective spray before storing it for future use.

Once the protectant coatings are dry on all your outdoor fabrics, start getting your cookout in gear and welcoming your guests!

What are Water-resistant Sprays and Superhydrophobic Coatings?

The term “superhydrophobic” might sound complex, but what is really means is super water-resistant and super-protected. You’re probably already familiar with it, just in a different way.

The NeverWet brand is virtually synonymous with superhydrophobic.

If you see the NeverWet name on your Realtree or Mossy Oak hunting clothes or on your Rust-Oleum paint can, you’re reaping the benefits of the science behind the term.

Hydrophobic Coating Technology

Hydrophobic literally means fear of water and NeverWet’s superhydrophobic coating technology gives all kind of surfaces a superpower protective layer against water. It makes water so fearful that it forms into a droplet and rolls away almost immediately.

Famous brands like RealTree and Mossy Oak use it to help hunters and outdoorsman stay outside longer with clothing that’s protected against inclement weather. A superhydrophobic coating weakens water’s ability to bond to a surface. It forces rain to form into droplets when it lands on fabric, and the repelled water then rolls off the surface.

For metal surfaces, fabric, carboard and other surfaces that deteriorate or are destroyed by moisture, NeverWet superhydrophobic water-resistant coatings are the superhero blocking out the enemy.

The Science of Water Repellency

Here’s a very simple scientific explanation as to why these water-resistant products are so great at protecting against inclement weather.

When a water droplet falls on a surface that’s been treated with a hydrophobic or superhydrophobic coating, it forms a sphere. The coated surface hates water so much that instead of water spreading out on the surface, water sits on top like a ball and a contact angle is formed. That angle pushes the spheres of water off the surface.

The water droplets that form on a hydrophobic surface usual have a contact angle of 90 degrees or more. Water droplets on a superhydrophobic surface have a contact angle of 150 degrees or more. Either way, those angles are enough to “push” away the water.

A bonus with those droplets moving off the surface: They carry particles of dirt with them!

Hydrophobic Spray for Fabric

All sorts of fabric benefit from the water-resistant power of NeverWet coatings. BearPaw brand boots and Totes brand umbrellas use NeverWet’s industrial fabric formulations to provide protection against moisture and to prevent stains. In the big picture, finding a NeverWet hang tag on your fabric product means you’re getting a money-saving benefit with that purchase.

Although these superhydrophobic formulations are for industrial use, NeverWet’s Boot & Shoe spray is a one-step, superhydrophobic, water repelling treatment designed for consumers to use. It’s a treatment that keeps footwear dry longer, protecting suede, leather, and canvas without discoloring.

PFC-Free Weather Protection

NeverWet also offers industries an environmentally friendly PFC-free water repellent finish for fibers. Its fabric treatments offer superhydrophobicity without the dangers of perfluorinated compounds (PFC). PFCs are manmade chemicals that are used in durable water-repellent coatings, but they are harmful to the environment.

Auto and Glass Protection

Auto Interior’s one-step liquid-repelling treatment is designed to keep your car’s interior dry, protecting upholstery, carpet, leather, and more. Again, NeverWet makes industrial coatings that protect metals and glass, but there are also retail products available for the same purposes.

Adding a superhydrophobic treatment to your windshield boosts its anti-icing performance too!

Tired of scrubbing water marks and soap scum off your shower doors? NeverWet’s glass formula provides a heavy-duty water shield for shower doors.

Use it on windows and other glass items. Tired of scrubbing the dirt off your basement’s sliding glass door? NeverWet Glass Cleaner provides streak-free, long-lasting protection that keeps glass shining and wards off those annoying, dirt-carrying splashes caused by torrential downpours.

The Superhydrophobic Superhero

NeverWet offers industrial coatings that are also oleophobic, repelling various oils like hydraulic oils and motor oil.  With famous brands like Realtree, Mossy Oak, Bearpaw and Totes (just to name a few) embracing its water-resistant power, NeverWet is virtually the superhero when it comes to fighting water. Learn about the different ways NeverWet products are used.

What Sets NeverWet Apart from the Rest?

When you run a business, knowing your competition is a huge leg up. At NeverWet, we believe that a product should not only meet our customers’ expectations, but surpass them. We make it a priority to understand what our customers want to see in a product and implement those needs however we can.

We are extremely fortunate to have been voted in the top 10 waterproof sprays for shoes in the July 2019 Z9 Buyers Guide! Today, we want to provide some insight as to what we do differently. Why our line of NeverWet water-repelling sprays is a cut above the rest.

Simple, One-Step Application

Many other hydrophobic sprays require a multi-step process and purchasing other products in their line before using the hydrophobic spray as a “top coat”. At NeverWet, we wanted to streamline the application process to improve your experience and the quality of your results. That’s why we created our unique hydrophobic fabric formula to apply as a one-coat, one-application spray.

We don’t want to make you purchase more products than necessary to create a uniquely highly durable, liquid-repelling fabric coating. Many of our coatings, whether for shoes, fabrics, or glass surfaces, require no priming or additional product use before application.

Additional Hydrophobicity

Our hydrophobic coatings are significantly stronger than what most technologies employ. While most other coatings such as Rain-X possess a 110˚ contact angle after treatment, NeverWet blows away the competition with a staggering 160-175˚ contact angle, earning us the title of a “superhydrophobic” treatment.

All of our NeverWet products are backed by countless hours of testing and research to create the highest-quality, lowest-cost product for you and your home or business. Interested? Find our products here or contact us for more information. We look forward to serving you!

What is an Oleophobic Surface? NeverWet’s Contribution

At NeverWet, we create products to improve every business in every field. While water-repelling qualities are extremely important, we know that some businesses need even more protection against not only water, but also food oils and machine oils (think: lubricants for equipment).

What Does Oleophobic Mean?

NeverWet’s oleophobic formula is designed to repel any liquids and oils, not just water. An oleophobic coating can save a company thousands of dollars in replacement materials in the event of oil gone awry.

Our oleophobic spray will repel chemicals such as lubricants, hydraulic oils, machine and motor oil, and food-grade oils. Materials that will be exposed to these chemicals deserve a chance to remain spotless – this coating system is ideal for protecting electronics, mechanical equipment, and sanitary surfaces that must remain free of water, oil, and other contaminants such as sand or dirt.

Who Can Use Oleophobic Spray?

Our oleophobic coating system is designed for industrial uses, as it is a two-part system applied by air-atomized spray.

Even as a two-part system, our oleophobic coating system works remarkably fast. After the initial base coat application, wait just 45 minutes and apply the top coat. Only 30 minutes after the top coat is applied, NeverWet is able to repel water and lighter oils. The typical wait time for optimal performance is 12 hours, after which the oleophobic properties have reached their maximum potential and any oil can be repelled.

NeverWet’s Anti-Corrosion Properties

We spend a lot of time talking about NeverWet technology in its purest form – superhydrophobic products designed to protect your fabric, shoes, and other water-sensitive materials from being ruined by water. However, we haven’t talked much about NeverWet’s anti-corrosion properties, and there is an incredible amount of value in this amazing product.

What is Corrosion?

Simply put, corrosion is the transformation of a refined metal such as steel or copper to its more chemically-stable form, such as its oxide, hydroxide, or sulfide. This is why we often hear about metals being “oxidized” when they appear rusty or discolored. The Statue of Liberty is a fantastic example of corrosion at work – centuries of exposure to rain (especially acid rain as the Industrial Revolution boomed) turned the original copper structure a greenish-blue color, typical of copper oxidation.

How Does NeverWet Help?

As previously stated, corrosion occurs when water disturbs the chemical makeup of refined metals. NeverWet industrial coatings form a protective surface to repel water that would otherwise find its way into the metal, even in a steel surface with an anti-corrosion coating. Water has a tricky little habit of finding a way into metal despite protective coatings, so we at NeverWet worked tirelessly to discover the solution.

Our NeverWet industrial coatings do more than traditional anti-corrosion coatings, which make use of “sacrificial” elements such as zinc to delay the degradation of the metal. These coatings only delay the inevitable, since their only true protection is to allow the water to degrade them rather than the original surface, which will be rendered helpless once again when the protective coating has been eaten away.

How Does the Competition Measure Up?

In comparative studies, Never-Wet technology has demonstrated a marked improvement in corrosion control and proven to fight corrosion four to six times better than the leading steel surface coating. Our coatings are tested in an extremely debilitating environment – a salt fog chamber, which we then compare to top-of-the-line polyurethane coatings currently used on bridges and skyscrapers everywhere.

How Does NeverWet Do What it Does? Hydrophobicity Explained

NeverWet products have been spotlighted by several big-name companies, such as Tesla and Totes, as revolutionary technology. But what’s the secret to our products’ continued success? Today, we want to dive into the scientific breakthrough technology that NeverWet products implement and explain how our products are a cut above the rest.

What is Hydrophobicity?

The technical definition of “hydrophobic” is literally “the fear of water”. Hydrophobic surfaces and materials repel water molecules. NeverWet is classified as a “superhydrophobic” material, making the surface it coats nonpolar.

Nonpolar molecules do no produce a static electric field, which is what usually attracts water molecules. Without a static electric field, the water molecules form more hydrogen bonds with themselves and the nonpolar molecules clump together. This creates the “water beading” effect that we see upon surfaces treated with one of NeverWet’s unique coatings.

How Does NeverWet Implement Hydrophobicity?

Water sits on surfaces coated by NeverWet technology in an almost perfect sphere. The contact angle of water molecules on a surface is the angle of the leading edge of a water droplet as measured from the center of the droplet. For example, a surface with a contact angle of 180˚ would mean that the water droplet sits on that surface as a perfect sphere.

Surfaces with a contact angle greater than 90˚ are considered hydrophobic surfaces, while surfaces with a contact angle greater than 150˚ are considered superhydrophobic. For comparison, Rain-X® treatments have a contact angle of 110˚, which makes it a hydrophobic surface. The typical contact angle for NeverWet coatings is 160-175˚, making it a superhydrophobic surface.

NeverWet offers a variety of innovative products that are still evolving (i.e. multi-surface coatings, glass coatings, fabric coatings); new uses for NeverWet technology are constantly being discovered.
